The Birth of Mindful Champs
Mindful Champs was born out of a deep desire to help children truly blossom by becoming the best version of themselves on the inside first. In a society where individuals place their self-worth on external markers, mental health issues are sadly at an all-time high. This is why giving children an emotional education is crucial, now more than ever, so that they have the skills and tools needed to nurture their mind and reach their full potential.
Our founder, Nima Patel, noticed a lack of importance being placed on giving children an emotional education during her time as a Primary School Teacher, so she set out to bridge this gap.
What Is an Emotional Education?
An emotional education involves teaching children about what emotions are, how they affect us, and what we can do to manage them. When we can identify our emotions effectively, it’s the first step to understanding our internal world. We can consider why we are feeling certain emotions and the effect they are having on us. We can then use the strategies we have learned to guide us through those emotions in a healthy way. Through this process, emotional intelligence is fostered.
Why Do Children Need an Emotional Education?
When it comes to happiness and success in life, EQ matters just as much as IQ. Difficult feelings, especially for children, can lead to destructive emotions, such as shame, as well as negative thoughts about themselves. Of course, heightened emotions, such as anger or fear are very normal. However, when they have the ability to control our mental state and negatively impact our lives, this is not okay.
Children need to be given the guidance to understand their wide range of emotions in a safe space so they can develop the skills and capacity required to manage them accordingly. However, while the world has been focused on academic achievement in childhood, developing emotional skills has been largely ignored. Children are educated in so many subjects areas, from sounding out words to brushing their teeth, yet we fail to equip them with an emotional education that can dramatically improve the quality of their lives. Just like counting or reading, the ability to be self-aware, recognise, communicate, and manage our feelings in a healthy way, are skills that must be taught – they don’t necessarily materialise as we age.
Mindful Champs was founded by Nima Patel in October 2020. Nima is a psychology graduate, former primary school teacher, and children’s author, with a family background of over 30 years’ experience in early years education.
Through her own personal challenges and having lost her father very suddenly at a young age, Nima suffered from high levels of anxiety, which took a toll on her mental health. She realised the ability to manage one’s emotions
healthily can deeply improve the quality of our lives; however, we are simply not taught how to do this as children.
Combining her two passions in life: mindfulness and personal development, she has passionately created the brand Mindful Champs, with a mission to provide children with a much-needed emotional education, because, after all – they will be the leaders of tomorrow.
Developing emotional intelligence is foundational for a child’s long-term mental health. It will be their super power in navigating the big world out there!
